About Us
Ethnic productions co Ltd was founded on the principle of skill enhancement for purposes of achieving quality productions and performances by visual and performing artists operating under organised entities (groups) or as individuals. Our aim is to create and provide employment opportunities for established artists and also to play the role of facilitator/s in tapping, nurturing and guiding upcoming visual and performing artistes through the steps and process of turning talents into paying profession. Ethnic Productions seeks to identify potential in young men and women in our poverty stricken society with the aim to establish, create and identify markets that can absorb their products. This develops a culture of sustainable employment and wealth creation. It also discourages idleness that is associated with rise in criminal activities, prostitution and other social vices that lead to loss of life among young people . We also aim to curtail contributing factors to the HIV prevalence within poverty stricken areas. Ethnic Productions also views art as an educational tool that serves to disseminate information on matters affecting society and uses different forms of art to this end. Currently our activities are within Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, but we are working towards an expansion program that will see our network base grow to cover major cities in Kenya. We intend to spread out to East Africa and reach the entire continent in the long run. within the next two and half to three years. This will enable us to gain knowledge and gather ideas and that have been successfully tried and applied in other parts of the world. Ethnic Productions’ purpose, activities and accomplishments -Our background/History Ethnic Productions was founded in December 2005 with the purpose of serving the interests of artists and to enhance professional levels, improving performance. Ethnic Productions realised the need for social responsibility especially as an arts based organisation. With this in mind, we have taken a lead position in tackling issues and problems facing artists, individuals and the communities. GIVING BACK is meant for artists who have made it to go back to their communities and share experiences, knowledge and impart skills in relevant fields. In the same light we have started music clinics, dance classes, theatre performances, poetry forums and art exhibitions for both professional and upcoming artists. I) MUSIC In 2006 Ethnic Productions volunteered to train young boys and girls in the slums of KIBERA and KOROGOCHO. This was not commercial but helped to highlight talent disadvantaged by lack of resources. Ethnic Productions is experimenting traditional forms of music and instruments using modern and formal approach. We’ve sought the expertise of some of the best local instrumentalists and are in the process of recording. The purpose of this is to; i) Establish sources of revenue for people with talent, who through guidance and assistance stand a chance to break through in the industry. ii) Create a Database for all the information gathered through the process and establish a research/info centre that will provide material for educational purposes. iii) Preserve our cultural heritage and traditional music and instruments. iv) Develop our traditional instruments to conform with changing technology. II) DANCE Currently, we are working closely with two traditional dance companies involved in creation and production of African traditional and contemporary dances for performances and instructions. i) Radi Dance Company Radi Dance Company is actively involved in performance and preservation of traditional dance forms. ii) Ngoma Africa African Tumbas deals in African interpretive dance. The group uses traditional forms of dance and through research, choreography of movement, mime and juxtaposition of old and modern lifestyles, brings into relevance traditional customs and culture in present times. III) THEATRE Ethnic Productions holds its theatre and poetry performances.. Our story telling team holds work shops and presents stories to the general public and through mass media. They were part of SIGANA MOTO MOTO, a 30 minutes program that aired a total of 12 episodes on KBC Television in the year 2004. HEKAYA members came together after the dissolution of the pact under which they had been operating and are currently working under the Ethnic Productions umbrella. Hekaya Performance Programme Hekaya is a Swahili word meaning stories. All forms of performances are attempts to tell stories. Viewed from the backdrop of the pedestrian association of story telling with a recount of the past, the Hekaya program does not see stories this way. Stories are both past, archaic, modern and contemporary. It is with this in mind that the Hekaya troupe seeks to tell stories. African Storytelling Africa is a physical reality in geographical terms. It is also a member of the community of the nations of the world. It is in this light that stories are told, looking at the world through the African lense, paying full recognition to the reality of the world today in terms of our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and the full potential of the human being. Hekaya story telling is not about what animals did somewhere in a thick forest on one evening in the dim past. Social Responsibility Apart from the enterprise side of Hekaya, we also have programs that are geared towards giving back to the community. Under the general approach of Ethnic Productions to social issues, we have developed and integrated programs that see the company working with the community in various ways. As Hekaya’s contribution to the society, we have integrated storytelling into the Ethnic Productions Children program. Under this arrangement, children especially from slum areas are trained in various forms of performances. The Hekaya team is taking a lead role in training young storytellers to tell well the story of life IV) POETRY Ethnic Productions will hold regular poetry fora without bias to any themes. Poets are at liberty to perform/recite poetry without limitation. Poetry lacks attention. This can be directly attributed to lack of popularity, a trend Ethnic Productions intends to reverse. We have seen the need to open up space allowing poets to showcase their capabilities and creativity levels. In all recitals, we will have professional judges, lecturers and teachers to build up capacity of poets and the general industry. V) ART EXHIBITIONS Ethnic Productions held an exhibition titled WOMAN AND SENSUALITY featuring the works of Peter Mukabi and Beatrice Wanjiru. These two artists have employed the use of acrylic, oil and charcoal on canvas. The exhibition was held in July 2005 at Club SOUNDD, Nairobi.
